A prophecy is just a saying about the future. So, if you were to say, "It's going to rain tomorrow", that (technically) is a prophecy.
Now, Biblical Prophecy is something different! If a prophecy is contained in the Bible, if God Himself (who cannot lie) says that something is true, whether it is now or in the future, than that's good eough for me! God says it, that settles it (whether you believe it or not!)!
So Biblical Prophecy is our hope for the future, and our focus in these dark times, in these last days! As J. Dwight Pentecost says in Things To Come,
...men have been forced to turn to eschatological considerations as the source of hope for a sin-cursed world. The Bible and the revelation it contains proves to be the one source of hope and confidence for the future, and men are turning more and more to it for light in the present darkness.
God, the architect of the ages, has seen fit to take us into His confidence concerning His plan for the future and has revealed His purpose and program in detail in the Word. A greater body of Scripture is given to prophecy than any other one subject, for approximately one-fourth of the Bible was prophetic at the time it was written. That portion is devoted to the unfolding of God’s program.
There are a few different ways that we can look at Biblical Prophecies. For the purpose of this blog, we are going to look at the Word of God and divide it into six (really, seven) different kinds of Scripture.
The first thing is, Is there any kind of prophecy, fulfullment, or other sayings by God in this passage? If not, then we won't worry about it (for this blog). After all, Matthew 1:2, Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; may be super exciting for a genealogist, but it really won't matter from our point of view.
This leaves us with the six scripture "types" we mentioned earlier.
Each of these types will show us more about the Scripture, as we work through them. We'll understand more about how God is moving, prophecies have been fulfilled, and how even more prophecies will be revealed in days to come!
